POLICY STATEMENT FOR PARISHES ON THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE ADULTS

Please note:

1. In relation to child protection this applies to all parishes whether or not there are any children or youth work groups in the Parishes as it is assumed that some

children will attend church from time to time

2. In relation to vulnerable adults this again applies to all parishes

3. Acceptance of the policy/implementation should be minuted.

1. POLICY

The Pinchbeck, West Pinchbeck and Surfleet PCCs have adopted :-

1.1. Protecting all God's children (House of Bishops' 2004) is the Child Protection Policy for the Church of England

1.2. Promoting a safe church (House of Bishops’ 2006) is the Church of England’s policy to protect Vulnerable Adults.

A copy of both policies is obtainable on www.lincolncathedral.com go to living and learning then protection: Adults and Children

2. PROTECTION OF CHILDREN: STRATEGY, IMPLEMENTATION AND DEVELOPMENT

2.1. Supporting Families. It is suggested that child protection should be seen within the context of family support. As most children live within a family

when one supports the family one supports the child. The PCC supports this approach.

2.2. Confidentiality The House of Bishops’ Policy contains (at page 20) a General Duty of Confidentiality. While respecting the need for confidentiality it is legally possible, appropriate and highly desirable to disclose relevant information to the public authorities for the sake of protecting children. The PCC understands both the need for confidentiality and the requirement to disclose information to protect children.

2.3. Insurance The House of Bishops’ Policy (Appendix 7 page 30) gives advice about insurance for those working with children and young people The PCC

has reviewed its arrangements in the light of this advice

2.4. Standards in working with children and young people. It is important that the environment in which children and youth groups meet is appropriate and safe.

Further advice can be obtained from the Youth Work Adviser (01522 504050). The PCC has reviewed its work in the light of this guidance)

2.5. Specific work/contact with children. The PCC has identified the following children and youth work activity where the House of Bishops’ policy should apply:-

1. Baptismal Visitors

2. Sunday School, Pram Service, Kids Club and Youth Group leaders and helpers

3. Authorised and Licensed Ministers

4. Churchwardens

5. Choir Master

6. Adult servers (St Mary’s)

7. Sacristan and Verger (St Mary’s)

8. Vicar’s PA

9. Church Hall Cleaner (St Mary’s)

2.6. Support in all these schemes volunteers will be approved, supported and trained in line with the House of Bishops’ Policy. The Diocese of Lincoln will make training on child protection available. Details are shown on the Diocesan website

2.7. Posters will be displayed which feature ChildLine and Parentline (copies available from Church House Lincoln)

2.8. What to do if you are concerned about a particular child or young person. Do not keep this to yourself. Share the concern with someone you can trust who can help you. The PCC agrees this approach. The Diocese’s Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Adviser can be contacted on 01673 863280

2.9. Monitoring arrangements: This policy, strategy, implementation and development will be reviewed annually by the PCC using the monitoring form at Appendix 1
