A wedding – one of life’s great moments…

A wedding is one of life’s great moments, a time of solemn commitment as well as good wishes, feasting and joy. In the Bible, St John tells us how Jesus shared in such an occasion at Cana, and gave there a sign of new beginnings as he turned water into wine.

Marriage is intended to be a creative relationship, as God’s blessing enables husband and wife to love and support each other in good times and in bad. For Christians, marriage is also an invitation to share life together in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. In the Glen Group, we endeavour to provide the support necessary for couples to plan their marriage service and to celebrate it joyfully at St Mary’s, St Lawrence’s or St Bartholomew’s.

Love between couples is a precious gift – it needs to be recognised, celebrated and protected. That is the purpose of marriage.

Your wedding day gathers together all the resources you both need to make marriage work: deep personal promises; a public commitment to each other – whatever the future holds; the joining of two sets of family and friends; a trust that the God who gives us the gift of this life will inspire us with the love and forgiveness that can enable two lives to become one. Choose the ingredients of your wedding day carefully. Seek advice from the many people eager to help – parish priests and photographers, caterers and caretakers – and plan an occasion which will draw together all the resources you feel you need: then it will provide shape and direction for the rest of your lives together.

The procedure for couples wanting to be married at Pinchbeck, West Pinchbeck or Surfleet

  1. Contact the Vicar, the Rev’d Dr Murray Harvey (01775 725 698), and make an appointment to see him. At this first appointment, agree on a date and time for your Marriage.

  1. The Vicar’s Administrative Assistant for weddings (Mrs Pat Smith) will write to you confirming the date and time and providing details of fees. This letter will ask you for a deposit of £50. If you want to make a firm booking, send the deposit to Mrs Smith as soon as possible. The cheque of postal order should be made out to the PCC of the church in which you will be married.

  1. Stay in contact with the Vicar, as further appointments will be necessary to prepare you for your marriage and to organise the details of the service (e.g., the Service Booklet). The Vicar will want to discuss your relationship and make sure that you have considered the spiritual issues and communication issues relevant to your future married life together.

  1. Banns. It is up to you to organise the reading of Marriage Banns in any church outside the Glen Group. This will be explained to you in the letter and by the Vicar.

  1. The rehearsal. This will be organised to take place a day or two before  your Wedding.

The Order of Service

Many couples today like to have a service sheet prepared for their Marriage service. Set out below is the information you will need to put together the order of service for your wedding.

Outline for the Order of Service for Weddings

If you want to print the full text of the service you are welcome to do so, but you will need to ask for a copy of the full text. Provided here is the outline of the service, which you are asked to include in the service booklet as a minimum requirement. If you require the words of the hymns, please obtain these from the organist. Please proof-read the draft (if possible show the draft to the Vicar) before having multiple copies printed. If you would like the following sent to you as an email attachment, ask the Vicar.

Front Page:

The design for the cover is up to you. But somewhere on the cover, please include:

expbul1d   Names of the couple

expbul1d   Place (Church), date and time of the service (required by copyright)

expbul1d   Anything else you want to include.

Inside:

Please print the following headings and prayers in the booklet exactly as set out below:

The Welcome

God of wonder and of joy:

grace comes from you,

and you alone are the source of life and love.

Without you, we cannot please you;

without your love, our deeds are worth nothing.

Send your Holy Spirit,

and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love,

that we may worship you now

with thankful hearts

and serve you always with willing minds;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn (if any) Please insert the words of the (first or only) hymn here.

The Declarations

Will you, the families and friends of N and N, support and uphold them in their marriage now and in the years to come?   We will.

In addition to the above, you may also include here either:

N and N have declared their intention towards each other. As their parents, will you now entrust your son and daughter to one another as they come to be married?      We will.

Or

Who brings this woman to be married to this man?      I do.

Please include all of the following:

Scripture Reading

(If a friend or family member is going to read this, you may wish to include the name of the person).

Hymn (if there are two hymns, include the words of the second one here).

The Vows

The Giving of Rings (or The Giving of the Ring is there is only one)

The Blessing of the Marriage

Registration of the Marriage

(If there is to be music played here, you may wish to say what is to be played or sung).

The Prayers

The prayers conclude with the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

The Dismissal

Finally, on the back page (or somewhere in the booklet) must be included the following statements:

expbul1d   You are asked to refrain from using confetti in the church or churchyard.
