Pinchbeck Diocese of Lincoln 12
March 2007 St Mary’s Church Pinchbeck PRESS RELEASE In March 2006 there was a fire in St Mary’s Church
at Pinchbeck. Since September 2006 the church has been closed to facilitate
cleaning at high levels and to attend to other repair work being undertaken
at the same time. Work on the church is continuing but the Parochial Church
Council are launching an appeal for funds so that their plans for
improvements to the interior of the building can be carried out. Hence the Parochial Church Council is seeking help to
adapt St Mary’s Church to the world of today whilst maintaining all that is
best of its historic architecture and character. It
is necessary to provide a better access, suitable for the disabled, a W.C., a
Parish Room for use by the Sunday School and youth group, for meetings and
events for both church and other organisations, and an area for social
gatherings where coffee and food can be provided. The Church’s prime purpose
remains the worship of God and all these facilities will both enhance that
ministry and also better provide for Weddings, Baptisms, Funerals and for a
multitude of other events. We intend that the Church will be open to all,
better equipped to serve everybody in the village and used not just on
Sundays but regularly during the week. Our plans to achieve this were interrupted in March 2006 by the Fire.
Happily the repair and cleaning work is now nearing completion and, amidst
great rejoicing, we shall be moving back into St. Mary’s on Palm Sunday, 1st
April. However we felt obliged
to take advantage of the scaffolding and craftsmen on site to carry out
important maintenance work at favourable prices. This included roof repairs,
renovation of timbers in the Nave including some of our angels, the
restoration of two beautiful stained glass windows – now a sight to behold –
a full overhaul of the organ, and a facelift for many of our memorials. This
has cost us about £85,000, depleting the funds which were earmarked for the intended
improvements. We are anxious to continue with this work after the repairs are
completed to take advantage of the contractors being on site and thereby save
expense. To do this we need to raise £100,000 as quickly as possible. This
is a tall order but we are confident that with goodwill and hard work it can
be achieved. Those
who are interested in supporting this appeal can ask for an appeal brochure
to be sent to them by phoning 01775 725 698 or simply download it from the
website at www.glengroup.org.uk Alternatively cheques made out to St Mary’s
Church Pinchbeck can be sent to The Vicarage 19 Spalding Road Pinchbeck
PE113UD. People can visit the church’s web site at www.glengroup.org.uk for
more details of the fire, the ongoing work at the church, and the appeal. Yours
sincerely, Rev
Dr Murray Harvey Roy
