The Vicar : Rev Dr Murray Harvey

The Vicar, The Rev’d Dr Murray Harvey, was appointed in May 2002. Murray is an Australian Priest who is also a British citizen. He took up his appointment as Vicar of the Glen Group after serving for 7 years as Vicar of the Anglican Parish of Tamborine Mountain in the Diocese of Brisbane, Australia. He studied at the University of Queensland and spent three years as a residential student at St Francis College, Brisbane. He was Ordained Deacon in 1991 and Priest in 1992 at St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane. He served two curacies in the Brisbane Diocese, 1992-93 at Christ Church, Milton, an historic inner city parish and then from 1994-95 at one of the largest suburban parishes in the city of Brisbane, St Clements-on-the-Hill, Stafford.  Murray is married with two children.

The Vicar aims at enabling lay participation and leadership in parish life, at creating opportunities for a contemporary expression of Anglican worship, the development of a shared vision for mission and outreach, and sound teaching through effective preaching and regular house groups. In his parish in Australia there were 13 Licensed Liturgical Assistants (similar to Lay Readers) who ministered in the three centres of worship. There was also a variety of House Groups and small groups for bible study and lay theological education. Murray was involved in Theological Field Education in the Diocese of Brisbane, supervising candidates preparing for ordination as Deacon and Priest. In the Glen Group the Vicar is keen to identify and promote opportunities for collaborative ministry within and between the three parishes, and to nurture and support the three Local Ministry Teams.

Murray also serves as a Bishops’ Adviser to the Church of England bishops, which involves travelling to different parts of the country to interview people who are offering to train for the ordained ministry. He is also a Vocations Adviser in the Diocese of Lincoln. In this role he meets with people from within the Lincoln Diocese who are exploring their vocations to some form of ordained or Reader ministry, liaising closely with the Diocesan Director of Ordinands and sitting on the diocesan selection panel.

The Vicar is assisted in his work by a part-time PA, Mrs Heather Dickinson who works from the parish office and from her home.

Lay Reader: Michael Pemberton

Born and brought up in rural East Suffolk, I went to  study History at Royal Holloway College, University of London.  From there I went on to teacher training in Leeds.  Since then I have been working as a teacher, for 2 years in South Croydon, 12 years in Salisbury and since 1986 in Spalding.  I became a Christian at the time of my confirmation, since when I have been involved in the work and life of the Church of England.  I have served on PCCs, Deanery and Diocesan Synods and the Bishop’s Council in Salisbury.  I trained as a Reader while I was in Salisbury, being Admitted and Licensed just before we moved to Pinchbeck, since when I have exercised my ministry in St Mary’s, and more widely in the Deanery of Elloe West.  For a time in the 1990s I was the secretary for the Lincoln Diocese Readers’ Board.

Lesley - for Website display at websize

Lay Reader: Lesley Pemberton

Lesley was born and brought up in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, where her family have roots going back as far as records show.  She is the daughter of a primary school headmaster and his wife.  She went Greenhead High School, then to Royal Holloway College, University of London, where she gained B.A. and M.Phil degrees in English Literature; she took a post-graduate teaching certificate at Cambridge University.  Lesley had met Michael at London University and they were married when Lesley had finished at Cambridge.  They lived for 12 years in Salisbury, where Lesley taught at South Wilts. High School, before the birth of their children Hannah and Mark.  The family moved to Pinchbeck in 1986 and for the last 15 years Lesley has taught at Spalding High School, where she is currently Head of English.  Lesley had no church links until she became a Christian during her time at university, deciding soon afterwards to join the Church of England, into which she was confirmed as a young adult.  She was actively involved in house group and pastoral ministry at St Paul's Church, Salisbury, then with childrens' and young people's groups in Pinchbeck.  She was licensed as a Lay Minister with the St Mary's team in 2000 and became a Lay Reader in 2004.  Her interests include drama, reading and cricket.

Lay Reader: Barrie Chapman

I have an Engineering background and spent most of my working career in the Science Museum, London. If, when you visited, you pressed a button, turned a handle or discovered how something worked, the chances are that I had something to do with it! This also applies to The National Railway Museum, York; Film and Television Museum, Bradford; and Concorde exhibition, Yeovilton. All came to a sudden end when at age 50 I was one of the 10% Museum staff made redundant.

I had previously had some training and been leading Church Services for a number of years, but now was able to study and qualify formally. Four years later I was recognised as Reader in the Church of England, which gave equivalent recognition in the Methodist, Baptist and United Reform Churches. In addition, I completed specialised courses in Bereavement, Pastoral Care and Counselling. I had my own Counselling Practice for several years and currently lead Church Services regularly, as well as Funerals when required.

Lay Reader: Nicki Bland

Nicki is a graduate of London University.  She has spent a varied career in teaching both in the maintained and independent  sectors and has gained much pastoral insight through her residential work in schools with pupils and their families.  She is currently Chaplain at Kimbolton School near Huntingdon where she also teaches Religious Studies, Mathematics and PSHE.  Nicki has been an Anglican Lay Reader for over twelve years and has been licensed in the Dioceses of Oxford, Bath & Wells and Ely.  She has a particular interest in preaching and visiting.

The Local Ministry Team in the Glen Group

The Local Ministry Scheme is an expression of a collaborative approach to the church’s mission in the world. The Local Ministry Scheme of the Diocese of Lincoln has been adopted in each of the parishes of the Glen Group, and there is an accredited ministry team in each parish. Local ministers are involved in a great variety of ministries across the Glen Group. Team members also undertake various roles according to their individual skills.  These include bereavement counselling, marriage and baptism preparation, home Communion for the sick and housebound, liaison with local schools, youth work, editorship of the church magazines, etc.

These ministries are undertaken in collaboration with the Vicar, who meets with the combined team on a regular basis. Each Local Minister, as well as being Accredited with the Diocese, has a current Learning and Service Agreement, which is reviewed regularly. This agreement sets out his or her role and responsibilities in the parish as an accredited local minister.
